Project scope: Definitive was engaged to design a portable spectrophotometer for inspection and control of painted surfaces, plastic parts, package prints, automotive parts and other manufactured goods.

In measurement, accuracy and repeatability is key. To guarantee both features in a handheld device, Definitive overcame many challenges. First, with a portable handheld unit proper orientation to the targeted surface is critical for accurate measurement. Another consideration was that the surface being measured might not be flat or easy to reach. That’s where Definitive’s expertise in usability and ergonomics came into play; we juggled the space for components with fixed relationships into a form factor that was functional to hold and manipulate.  The Datacolor 45G® is now the benchmark for portable color appearance and gloss measurement.
